Green algae on siding is a common problem, especially in humid or shady areas. It can make a home look dirty and worn down, and removing it often feels like a lot of work. After trying pressure washing and expensive cleaners, I finally learned a simple trick from my neighbor that made the job almost effortless.

The Simple No-Scrub Solution
The cleaning mixture only requires:
- 1 gallon of water
- 1 cup of white vinegar
- 1 tablespoon of dish soap
The vinegar helps kill and loosen the algae, while the dish soap helps the solution stick to the siding.
Why Algae Grows on Siding
Algae thrives in damp, shaded spots. Vinyl and painted siding can hold moisture, especially on the north side of homes or under trees, creating the perfect environment for green buildup.
How to Use the Trick
Pour the mixture into a garden sprayer and spray the affected areas thoroughly. Start from the bottom and work upward for even coverage.
After spraying, let the solution sit for 20 to 30 minutes. This step does most of the work by breaking down the algae without scrubbing.
Rinse It Away
Once the solution has had time to sit, rinse the siding with a garden hose from top to bottom. In most cases, the algae washes away easily with very little effort.
Important Safety Tips
- Wet nearby plants before spraying.
- Keep pets away until the area is rinsed clean.
- Test a small hidden spot first if you’re worried about paint damage.
Keeping Algae From Returning
To help prevent algae growth, trim back trees and bushes, keep gutters clean, and reduce moisture around your home. In most cases, the results can last several months before another treatment is needed.
