My mil showed me an effortless trick for removing stubborn orange tomato stains

We’ve all opened a cupboard and found plastic food containers stained with that stubborn orange tint from spaghetti sauce, curry, or chili. Regular washing rarely removes it completely, but my mother-in-law shared a simple trick that works with almost no effort.

Why Plastic Gets Stained

Tomato-based foods contain lycopene, a natural pigment that sticks to plastic, especially when mixed with oils and heated in the microwave. Over time, the color settles into tiny scratches and porous areas, making stains hard to remove.

The Simple Cleaning Trick

All you need is:

  • 1 tablespoon baking soda
  • Juice from half a lemon
  • A little water
  • Direct sunlight

Mix the baking soda with enough water to form a thick paste. Spread it over the stained areas, then squeeze lemon juice on top. The mixture will fizz slightly as it reacts.

Next, place the container in direct sunlight for at least 4 hours. The lemon helps break down oils, the baking soda lifts residue, and the sun naturally bleaches the stain.

Rinse and Repeat if Needed

After soaking, rinse the container with warm water and wipe away the paste with a soft sponge. Most stains will be much lighter or completely gone.

For tougher stains, repeat the process or add a splash of white vinegar for extra cleaning power.

How To Prevent Future Stains

  • Rinse containers soon after use
  • Avoid microwaving tomato-based foods in plastic
  • Use glass containers for heavily pigmented foods whenever possible

This simple method can also work on cutting boards, plastic utensils, and other kitchen items with stubborn food stains.
