Your habit of talking to your pets, plants or any inanimate object, is a sign of intelligence! You’re not a crazy cat lady, you’re just smart. The act is called anthropomorphizing, which is, the attribution of human traits, emotions, or intentions to non-human entities.
Nicholas Epley, a professor of behavioral science at the University of Chicago, – “Historically, anthropomorphizing has been treated as a sign of childishness or stupidity, but it’s actually a natural byproduct of the tendency that makes humans uniquely smart on this planet,”
If you are a pet owner, there is a very good chance that you have spent a great deal of time conversing with your animal. While there are some who will look upon this habit with disdain, chatty pet owners actually have the right idea. Our pets are never going to be able to hold up their end of the conversation but that does not mean that we should ever stop talking to them.
People who find these behaviors strange may feel as if they are the sane ones. In reality, studies have shown that speaking to pets as if they are our friends is a sign of intelligence. The act of talking to animals is known as anthropomorphizing. This is when humans begin to ascribe human emotions and traits to entities that are decidedly not human.
Talking to your pets does not make you childish or silly in any way. It is considered to be one of the byproducts of being human on planet Earth. The human brain will always find human-like qualities in non human entities and this is known as anthropomorphism. Once believed to be a trait that was only found in children, anthropology experts who have studied the topic believe that adults who talk to their pets are displaying intelligence.
A Harvard study showed that humans are also likely to provide animals with human names and refer to them by the proper gender pronouns. There are no other living beings on the planet with the ability to locate human behaviors in the most random inanimate objects. Anthropomorphism also occurs when we begin to assign our pets with certain character traits that are typically found in humans.
The human brain is so complicated that we are still unaware of what the mind is capable of. When the brain attempts to find human characteristics in items that are inanimate, this is a sign of creativity. Pets also benefit from our chatter because it gives them the chance to learn more from our words and gestures. It is a sign of evolution.
Dogs are able to understand more of our words than cats can. Cats have other ways to communicate with us if they so choose but they do not care to in most instances. In summation, it is perfectly normal to talk to your pets and if anyone tells you otherwise? Be sure to direct them to the results of these studies as soon as possible!
